Marijuana legislation announced by Maryland House leadership
ANNAPOLIS (AP) Lawmakers on Thursday introduced a measure to legalize recreational marijuana for adults that supporters say would put the state on a path for an equitable cannabis industry, if voters approve it in November.
The bill would create an implementation plan based on the findings of the House Cannabis Referendum Workgroup, House Speaker Adrienne Jones announced in a news release.
While I feel strongly that the voters should decide this issue, it is the General Assembly that is charged with making sure we have a legally defensible, equity-driven plan in place should they choose legalization," Jones, a Baltimore County Democrat, said.
The bill sets out to address criminal justice and public health issues, while also building a foundation for social equity in the industry, the speaker's office said.
