Former combat medic who died paddle boarding near Annapolis known as a fierce competitor

The Washington D.C. man who died after being found in the Chesapeake Bay Wednesday was making a name for himself locally as someone who wouldn’t let his disability stand in the way of his goals.

Cody Iorns, 25, died at a local hospital after he was pulled to shore by a group of paddle boarders near Annapolis.

Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson said he was part of a group of four paddle boarders who went into the Chesapeake Bay off Tolly Point at the mouth of the Severn River around 6:30 p.m. Investigators are trying to determine a cause of death, as Iorns was found face down in the water by one of his fellow paddle boarders.

The former army medic was a double amputee known for not allowing his condition to stop his love of competitive sports, which caught the eyes of local and national media outlets.
