Bucksport-area school board election in question
BUCKSPORTEmily Fitzgerald, one of the two candidates for an open position on the RSU 25 School Board running in a special election slated for December 30, announced December 8 that she will not accept the seat if she wins.
Fitzgeralds announcement comes as postcards promoting her candidacy are landing in voters mailboxes. The special election was scheduled after Fitzgerald and her opponent, Keith Kneeland Jr., both received 773 votes in the election on November 4.
It was brought to my attention by the district that there is a state statute, 20-A, that prohibits school board member spouses from being school employees or supervisory volunteers. My husband is the robotics coach for the middle school, Fitzgerald said.
Although he could stay on as a volunteer if he found a replacement, Fitzgerald said, it has been extremely difficult to find volunteers for this, let alone a replacement.
