I-49 South supporters tout economic impact study

Completing Interstate 49 South would be a boon for the construction industry, boost the regional economy and reduce the time drivers spend stuck in traffic, according to a study released Friday that I-49 supporters touted as validation of a project that's been in the works for three decades.

The study was commissioned by the Community Foundation of Acadiana in partnership with several regional groups that back the project.

It found construction jobs and shorter drive times outweigh the expense of what would be one of the most expensive roads in recent state history.

"It makes sense because the benefits to every citizen in south Louisiana outweigh the costs," said Jason El Koubi, president & CEO of the regional economic development group One Acadiana.
