John Monette Joins City Council on Interim Basis, Special Election to be Held in May
NEWPORT CITY- The Newport City Council appointed John Monette to fill a vacancy with the council on March 20. The position became available following the Town Meeting elections when Alderman Rick Ufford-Chase was elected mayor. Monette will serve until the May 6th election. The appointment is for 47 days.
At a prior council meeting, several residents criticized the council’s decision to appoint a temporary replacement. The council acted after receiving a petition calling for an election. The candidate elected in May will serve until Town Meeting Day in 2026.
Five candidates asked to be considered for the council seat. They were each allowed to speak for up to five minutes.
Karen Geraghty stated she was interested in the position but doesn’t plan to run for the council seat in May. She is deeply concerned about the direction the city has taken over the past year and a half.
