Louisiana keeps death penalty

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana will keep the death penalty in place for at least another year after the last effort of this spring's Legislative Session failed in the House Thursday.

House Bill 215 by Rep. Terry Landry, D-New Iberia, would have eliminated the death penalty for crimes committed beginning Aug. 1.

Landry, clearly lacking the votes to pass the bill, parked it after a passionate debate from both sides on the House floor.

Landry, D-New Iberia, is a former superintendent of the Louisiana State Police.
