Southern University Baton Rouge accreditation no longer in jeopardy, but SUNO's is now threatened

A year after being warned it could lose a vital accreditation needed to receive federal grants, Southern University in Baton Rouge announced Friday that it addressed all of the concerns and has been removed from the list of sanctioned schools.

“This is great news for not only the institution and students, but for our alumni and other supporters,” said Ray L. Belton, Southern University System president-chancellor. “Our team of dedicated faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that we demonstrated compliance with the principles of accreditation so that we are able to continue fulfilling our mission of providing a high-quality educational experience.”

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges placed Southern University on a warning list last June, citing missed benchmarks related to faculty, student achievement, "institutional effectiveness" and student complaints.

The warning list is the lightest of three possible penalties issued by the board. SACS can also place schools on probation or revoke accreditation entirely.
