Republicans are fighting an effort to strengthen Louisianas bestiality law, because they fear it is part of an underhanded effort to repeal the states unconstitutional ban on sodomy.
Louisianas current Crimes Against Nature statute prohibits the unnatural carnal copulation by a human being with another of the same sex or opposite sex or with an animal.
A proposal to strengthen the bestiality law would remove the words or with an animal from the Crimes Against Nature ban, and create a new statute with requirements for mental evaluations and penalties for trafficking.
However, the Associated Press reports that GOP lawmakers fear the proposal would untangle the bestiality law from the sodomy ban.

(24,259 posts)Of the same or opposite sex is illegal in LA... dang... Did the heat and humidity melt what little brains they have?
I'm a bit older a heterosexual female from the north who was divorced and active in a few large singles groups for a decade before my hubby and I found each other. IME most men (gay and hetro), that I knew as both friends and lovers, LOVE oral sex (which is included in the definition of 'sodomy'), and some hetro enjoy anal too. Heck, I'm willing to bet that most of the male population in LA love a BJ too, including the fear filled homophobic buttwipes linking bestiality with blow jobs and anal sex between consenting adults so what's with the, "bite your nose off to spite your face" bullpuckey?
Certainly bestiality should be a crime but sex between two (or more) consenting adults in a private area, doing whatever gets their groove on, is nobodies damn business and certainly shouldn't be illegal.

I personally think the Gummint should butt out of the sodomy issue, and Louisiana Republicans may come around once they get good polling.

Government should never be about legislating morality. That should be left to parents, whichever spiritual path, etc the person follows.
