Lawsuit alleges sex abuse in Louisville police Explorer Program
A 22-year-old man has sued a former and current Louisville police officer, as well as the city and the Boy Scouts of America, alleging he was sexually abused as a teenager in the Louisville Metro Police Youth Explorer Program.
The department acknowledged last October that its Professional Integrity Unit was investigating allegations that it described as “very concerning” against Officer Brandon Wood and former Officer Kenneth Betts.
The suit, filed Wednesday in Jefferson Circuit Court on behalf of a person identified only as “N.C.,” was sealed by Jefferson Circuit Judge Judith McDonald-Burkman on the motion of his lawyer, David Yates, who is also the Metro Council president.
The complaint names as defendants Wood and Betts as well as Maj. Curtis Flaherty, who has for years run the program created for boys and girls ages 14-19 who are interested in a career in law enforcement. It provides classroom instruction and practical exercises that are designed to familiarize teens with police work.
