Protests erupt outside Capitol over Beshear's handling of pandemic, disrupting briefing

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Impatient protesters demanding Gov. Andy Beshear reopen Kentucky disrupted his televised Wednesday afternoon pandemic update, chanting, blowing horns and shouting into a megaphone outside the window of the briefing room and nearly drowning out his comments to Kentuckians.

The protest began with just a few people holding signs on the Capitol lawn, but by the time Beshear started to speak, the group numbered about 100 people.

Protesters, some of whom appeared to be standing less than 6 feet apart from one another, chanted "we want to work" and "facts over fear." They yelled non-stop throughout Beshear's one-hour press briefing, switching up chants and occasionally sounding a horn.

About halfway through his briefing, Beshear acknowledged the protesters, saying "there's some noise in the background."

(Washington Post) - "The outside effort from conservative groups is expected to be led by Stephen Moore, a conservative at the Heritage Foundation who is close with White House economic officials; Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots; Adam Brandon, president of FreedomWorks, a conservative advocacy organization; and Lisa Nelson, chief executive of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative organization with ties to the Koch brothers, according to the three people, who were granted anonymity to reveal details of an effort that had not been publicly revealed."

So far these demonstrations are mostly about reopening the economy, but they have the potential for quickly morphing into a dangerous combination of the Charlottesville, Virginia, Unite the Right march and Cliven Bundy's Nevada range-war armed standoff, complete with Proud Boys, klan members and the usual bunch of menacing rightwing characters protesting government tyranny. I expect this to grow.

Every beautiful day in KY there is a normal amount of traffic. I have run these roads for over 30 years. The traffic in population centers is down maybe half. But on a nice day the traffic is the small towns is normal. People are not staying home. My state has decent covid numbers..but that's likely due to lack of testing. My sister is a nurse practitioner and she says that the local numbers of cases is much higher..they can only report positive tests. It's worse than what you think. Our national death toll strongly suggest over 5 million people are infected. And we have a fucking idiot in charge. I would pray to God for help but everyone in KY thinks God picked Trump. So that's no good.....

People who are dying to get back to work (literally) should be assigned to a special team whose main task is to place corona virus victims into body bags and load them into refrigerator trucks in New York or anywhere else in the nation (call it the "Covid-19 Strike Force" so that they'll feel tough and brave). Those not physically strong enough to do that could be given the job of attending to the dying at their bedside, comforting them in their final desperate moments spent isolated away from their loved ones.
