A crowd hundreds deep turned out in support of an ongoing demonstration against federal immigration policy on Saturday, motivated in part by a counterprotest by a self-described patriot militia group one street away.
The two groups never came face-to-face, but spent hours lobbing chants and insults at one another from across a police-lined buffer zone. Nearby roads were shut down and access to the protest areas were watched by police.
Members of Occupy ICE Louisville have been protesting outside the federal agencys downtown office for nearly a week calling for ICE to be abolished and opposing President Donald Trumps crackdown on immigration.
The group was joined by hundreds Saturday, including several social activist groups like Black Lives Matter Louisville and the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Justice, in what Jesus Ibañez, a core Occupy ICE organizer called a magnificent turnout.
