Kansas sheriffs seeks to cement job in constitution

Kansas sheriffs asked lawmakers on Thursday to pass a constitutional amendment that would ensure that county sheriffs are an elected position.

Taking the lead for the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter implored lawmakers to pass a bill that protects an office he said was eroding.

“We absolutely believe that the voters should have the power to vote who they want to be their sheriff,” Easter told the Federal and State Affairs Committee.

“If someone is not doing a good job, they’re held accountable by their voters,” he said.

Easter, legislative chair for the Sheriffs’ Association, said county commissions should not have the power to appoint sheriffs.
