Kansas Spends Millions More Training Engineers Than Jobs With Higher Demand

Jon Hu stepped away from Wichita State University’s engineering career fair with beads of sweat forming on his face.

Students and the employers who might offer them jobs had crammed into a university ballroom. Most were donned — and overheating — in suits in the crowded room.

“I’ve been wearing this suit for about five hours,” Hu said. “So, yeah. It’s very, very hot in this.”

In 2011, Kansas set a goal to crank out more engineers. The packed job fair showed some of the results of millions spent through the University Engineering Initiative to achieve that.

1. Both Purdue and Iowa State have been

expanding their engineering programs the last few years (probably going on everywhere). My daughter had an internship and had an accepted offer in September of her senior year (with the company she interned with). Her husband kicked around with a couple of contract jobs before catching on with the same employer after about a year. Both are 2016 ME graduates.

It took my daughter about two months to get a position after getting her BSN degree (with the hospital affiliated with the college she went too). She is doing really well for a nurse with no prior experience (she did have extra clinical hours through her college which she paid tuition for).

At Iowa State you have to pay more per year in engineering than other majors ($2,400/yr). We only have one public nursing option in the state (Iowa) that also has differential tuition of about $2,400/yr.
