An Iowa woman died when the pipe bomb she and family members created for a gender reveal party didn’t work the way they wanted.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office on Monday identified the victim as Pamela Kreimeyer. She was killed at the party in Knoxville, about 40 miles southeast of Des Moines.

The sheriff's office said members of the Kreimeyer family were experimenting with different types of explosive material on Friday and Saturday in an attempt to record a gender reveal that could be posted on social media.

On Saturday afternoon, Kreimeyer and five other family members, including the expectant mother, gathered and placed gunpowder in the bottom of a homemade stand that was welded to a metal base plate, according to the sheriff's office.

The inadvertent "pipe bomb" exploded, "sending metal pieces flying" and Kreimeyer, who was standing 45 feet from the device, was struck with one of the metal pieces and killed instantly, the sheriff's office said.

It would’ve been bad enough if this had just been a horrible accident but for something this fucking stupid? God.

2. What a sad, stupid way to go.

They were trying to do a gender reveal stunt that to post on fucking social media. I'm beginning to think the desire for social media publicity will be the death of civilization. Gender reveal parties are stupid; gender reveal stunts for social media are even more stupid; gender reveal parties for social media using pipe bombs are tragically stupid.

7. Gender reveal parties are a silly, self-centered way

to call even more attention to the wonderfulness of somebody's reproductive activities. I'm surprised they don't have conception parties (or maybe somebody's done that, too). But they're harmless enough until someone feels the need to broadcast their reproductive wonderfulness on social media, which tempts people to scale the heights of stupid until something tragic happens.
