Waterloo teacher on leave after "sniper rifle" comment about Greta Thunberg visit

WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) - A Waterloo teacher who made a social media comment about a sniper rifle on a post about climate activist Greta Thunberg visiting Iowa City has been placed on leave.

The District said Matt Baish has been placed on administrative leave as it investigates the comment. Baish is listed as a science teacher at Waterloo West High School.

In a post on Facebook regarding Thunberg's visit, Baish had commented: "Don't have my sniper rifle".

Iowa City police say they will have heightened security at Friday's event. Thunberg is scheduled to speak at a climate march at noon in downtown Iowa City.

1. You really have to wonder about someone who make comments like that on social media.

Did he think that it would go unnoticed or that he would remain anonymous?

This is not the kind of person you want teaching your children.

2. Especially someone who ostensibly has to deal with active shooter drills with children.

Imagine what would happen if a student had made such a threat.

3. If my kids were in that school I would want some assurance that teacher had been removed

before I would send my kids to school after that comment.
