The remaining Younkers stores here in Iowa are all scheduled to close today.
Before malls were popular in eastern Iowa, the rise of department stores started in downtown Cedar Rapids.
Younkers first opened their first Cedar Rapids store in Westdale back in 1979. It even featured a restaurant called the Peacock Room on the second floor. Although the store at Westdale closed earlier this year, department stores as a whole are seeing a decline.
The Dubuque one was even older, dating back to 1968. I think it was the last original Kennedy Mall anchor tenant left.
I went there yesterday and there was just a few racks of clothes and miscellaneous items left. The store was pretty much empty except for the fixtures and a couple employees.
Kind of sad to see them go. (I wonder if Kimmy and her groupies will try to blame this on Hubble)?

(18,007 posts)Our large mall has lost Pennys, Sears, and Younkers in the last couple of years. My local mall has gone from three anchors to one (Van Mauer). Over half the retail spaces are empty and considerable space is used for non-traditional mall offerings like a fitness gym and a cosmetology school.
The amazing thing is the growth of satellites and open air strips. The indoor mall concept seems to have come and gone.

(34,661 posts)Federated Department Store Group planned this when they Purchased this Chain as well as Carsons-Prairie-Scott,Herbergers and another group which I forget the name.. All about mining the Assets and loading them up with debt to be dumped later.
All in a effort to save Macey's.
