Iowa governor race: Hubbell ad defends Younkers claims from Reynolds campaign

Democrat Fred Hubbell is taking to the airwaves to defend his record at Younkers, the department store chain he headed in the mid-1980s and early ’90s.

The move comes in response to a recent television ad from Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds that criticizes his tenure there.

Hubbell is challenging Reynolds this year in the race for governor, and the argument over his stewardship of the Younkers chain, which he led from 1985 to 1992, has become a prominent part of the campaign.

Republicans have already criticized the retired Des Moines businessman for closing stores. But a new Reynolds ad says Hubbell also cut pay and benefits for Younkers workers in 1986, then gave himself a raise.

1. Reynolds has been endlessly banging this drum

She must think the electorate is stupid enough to believe that Republicans care about workers. Suuure.

What Hubbell needs to harp on and on is about how Reynolds and her predecessor Branstad, screwed up privatizing Medicaid. He should hit on how many people aren't getting care, how many have died, how many providers had to lay people off because they weren't getting paid. But so far, the campaign and/or the IDP haven't been emphasizing this.

2. Well, some of the electorate ARE stupid enough.

I agree, the IDP and Hubbell need to hit hard on the how the Reynolds and the GOP have screwed up the state. We can't let them control the narrative.

We've been getting a lot a positive feedback when canvasing door to door. We're targeting newly registered, and erstwhile Dem voters. People are sick of the crap going on.
