KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Donald Trump won over 60 percent of the 2016 vote in rural Iowa, where I live, and I haven’t heard much concern from Republicans over the president’s alleged infidelities with a porn actress, his ties to Russia or Jared Kushner’s real estate shenanigans.

One smaller manufacturer — a Trump voter — told me that his costs to produce his product nearly doubled overnight, and that his business has already been hurt by the tariffs. Prices didn’t rise only after the tariffs were announced; they started rising when Mr. Trump floated the idea.

But it’s the farm economy that rural Iowans are paying particular attention to. When the president first proposed a 20 percent import tax on Mexico to pay for his wall, Iowans objected: Mexico is our second-largest export partner after Canada.

The Ministry of Commerce said then that it could impose tariffs in two stages: first, a 15 percent duty on 120 products, including fruit and wine, and then, after further assessing the impact of the United States’ tariffs, a 25 percent tariff on eight other products, including pork, an important moneymaker, especially in farming regions in states that voted for Mr. Trump.

But the latest announcement said the tariffs that will take effect on Monday covered all 128 products, including the 25 percent charge on pork.

4. Between 68 and 89 Evagelicals took over the IA GOP. Most Iowans had no concepton of what that meant.

I moved to IA from CA in 68, and then in 89 I moved back to OK wnere I was born and grew up.

Growing up in OK and going to college in TX (both with high % of SoBaptists) I learned early what the close association between politics and church meant. Of course, when I was growing up, OK was a 1 party (democrats) state, but the church was allied with the politicians.

For example, when JFK was suggested as the VP candidate at the 56 democratic national convention, staunch SoBaptist OK senator Robert Kerr stopped the idea. It was obvious to me that he knew no SoBaptist would vote for a Cafholic.

6. I sound like a broken record, but I'm to the point that I'm looking at moving out of Iowa

Once I'm done with school I'm keeping the options open. At this point I'm thinking either Minnesota or Oregon.
