Sioux City transit driver retires after being charged with OWI while on the clock

SIOUX CITY | A longtime transit bus driver has resigned his position with the city after police charged him earlier this month with operating a city bus while intoxicated.

Howard Barrett, 64, was charged June 15 with first-offense operating under the influence. City attorney Nicole DuBois said Monday that he submitted his retirement the following day.

According to court documents, Sioux City Police officers stopped Barrett in the Shopko parking lot, 3025 Hamilton Blvd., at 7:14 a.m. June 15. Officers detected the odor of alcohol on his breath and administered a preliminary breath test.

The test result showed an alcohol concentration of .103, more than 25 percent above the legal limit, documents said.
