Write-in votes create uncertainty in Polk County special elections

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The results of two Polk County special elections are in, but some races remain unclear due to write-in votes.

Mitchellville voters were asked to select two city council members. Jerry Kyle was the only candidate running for a 4-year term. He received 221 votes, and there were 30 write-in votes. Cody Benton was the only candidate running for a 2-year term. He received 212 votes, but there were 35 write-in votes.

Josh Davis, who ran unopposed, is the apparent winner of the mayoral race in Runnells, receiving 54 votes. However, there were 24 write-in votes submitted in that race.

The Runnells city council races are more uncertain. Corey Walker-Zepeda ran unopposed for a 4-year term. He received 37 votes, but there were 43 write-in votes. It is not yet clear who those write-in votes are for.
