Cindy Axne to endorse Abby Finkenauer for U.S. Senate — an indication she will not seek the seat herselfU.S. Rep. Cindy Axne is endorsing her former colleague Abby Finkenauer's U.S. Senate campaign — an indication that Axne will not seek the seat herself as she instead weighs a possible reelection bid or gubernatorial run.
Axne and Finkenauer were both elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018, but Finkenauer lost her reelection bid in 2020. She recently announced she will run in 2022 for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley. Grassley, 87, the Senate's most senior Republican, has yet to announced whether he will seek an eighth term.
Axne had been among the small group of other high-profile Democrats considering a Senate campaign. But her endorsement Monday signifies she has ruled out that possibility.
"I'm going to do everything to support Abby, because Iowa needs Abby in the U.S. Senate," Axne said in a statement provided to the Des Moines Register.
