Indiana University president's intense focus allows few to get to know the man within

In the evenings, Michael McRobbie can often be found at the Iron Pit Gym. In his mid-60s, with salt and pepper hair that’s receded far past his forehead, he doesn’t exactly fit in with the meatheads who grunt as they lift and flex in the mirror for selfies. McRobbie, wearing white sneakers, black athletic pants and a T-shirt with the sleeves cut short, looks so out of place, one day an Indiana University student decided to ask the old man who he was and what he was doing there.

Greg Simmons, McRobbie’s personal trainer, looked at his client and then back at the student.

“Are you kidding me?” Simmons said. “He’s the president of your university.”

McRobbie, as president of IU, has been one of the most influential people in the state of Indiana for nearly a decade. His decisions affect the lives of more than 9,000 faculty members, 11,000 staff and nearly 115,000 students across nine campuses. But how many people really know him?
