Evansville Democrat who sent illegal ballot applications pleads guilty to felony charge

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — An Evansville woman accused of illegally mailing hundreds of absentee voter applications before the 2020 Indiana primary election pleaded guilty Thursdayto a felony charge.

Jan Reed, 69, appeared in Vanderburgh County Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to a single count of unauthorized absentee ballot, a level 6 felony.

She is accused of mailing the absentee ballot applications with instructions leaving voters no choice but to participate in the Democratic Party's June 2 primary election.

Attorney Michael Keating said there was no plea agreement. When Reed is sentenced at 9 a.m. June 1, Judge David Kiely could sentence her to a term of 6 months to 2 1/2 years. He could also choose to sentence her as a Class A misdemeanor with up to a 1-year term.

Aargh, this isn't the way to encourage people to vote and it hurts our candidates with bad publicity. Please follow the rules carefully if you are involved with any aspect of helping people to vote.
