Group asks for officer in fatal South Bend police shooting to be put on unpaid leave
SOUTH BEND Family and friends of Eric Logan, the man shot and killed by a police officer in June, are asking for the officer to stop being paid while the investigation is ongoing.
Logan, a 54-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Sgt. Ryan O'Neill, a white police officer. Following the shooting, O'Neill was placed on leave with pay pending the outcome of a criminal and internal investigation.
Tuesday, community members gathered to present a petition asking South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg to discontinue the officer's pay while the investigation is going on.
"It's unfair to the Logan family and it's unfair to the tax payers that he's getting paid after taking a life from the community," Vernado Malone, a friend of the Logan family, said at the news conference.
