Crawford County's tight election keeps Sheriff Rutan (R) in office

CRAWFORD COUNTY, ILL (WTHI) - Crawford County voters have chosen to keep their current sheriff, William "Bill" Rutan in office.

Unofficial results show Sheriff Rutan won his fourth term in a tightly contested race. While election officials have two weeks to count remaining mail-in ballots, the margin appears strong enough that the outcome is unlikely to change.

More than 2,500 votes were cast in the race, with fewer than 200 votes separating the candidates. That's a sharp contrast to the sheriff's previous elections, where margins were far wider.

"This is the lowest number that I have been elected on, so the public did speak and show their concerns on some of the issues that have been brought up," Rutan said. "So our main focus at this point is to make the sheriff's office better and to be a little more responsible with some things that just went on and just move on from there."
