Palatine, Ill. - A facebook post about "Black Lives Matter" protests is now the subject of an internal investigation at a suburban high school.

Some current and former teachers say they are outraged by a now-deleted Facebook post from a social studies teacher at Palatine High School.

The post says, in part:

"I find the term "white privilege as racist as the "N" word. You have not walked in my shoes either so do not make assumptions about me and my so called privilege. You think America is racist? Then you have been hoodwinked by the white liberal establishment and race baiters like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton."

3. I think that the Facebook post is protected speech.

The school district might have difficulty legally firing her for this specific post.

9. Isn't Community Standards In The Contract?

I used to read my wife's contract. (As a sub, most of it has nothing to do with me, so I don't even get a copy)
There were always clauses in there about discipline regarding violation of community standards.
It may be protected in general, but if there, she's a proxy signatory to a surrender of 100% protection.

She's obviously deplorable, but I don't think she crossed a line that she can be legally fired.

4. I think she needs to be enlightened

I know there are many white people who have had tough lives. Even some who have felt marginalized or the victims of raw deals. That’s not what we’re talking about when we talk about white privilege.

We need to ask her if she has ever been denied service simply because she is white; or been followed suspiciously in a store just because she is white; or stopped repeatedly by cops while driving or standing in a group just because she is white; or been incarcerated for seemingly nothing just because she is white; or told she is lazy just because she is white

I don’t think she understands the concept. Don’t fire her, educate her.

This is a white people problem. We need to educate ourselves. Black people are not obligated to educate us.

8. I didn't specify whether the "educator" should be

black or white. Indeed, I had not even thought of this education coming from a black person.

I am white, and I learned about white privilege over fifty years ago, when it was explained to us kids (though not using that term at the time) by our rabbi, who was telling us about his recent experiences in Selma, where he was one of the clergy surrounding MLK, and the lessons from it, in terms children could understand. It has never escaped my consciousness, and helped me to check my own biases over the years. I learned about it in the early 1960s from a white (Jewish) man in a very conservative midwestern place.
