Multi-state salmonella outbreak tracked to Honey Smacks cereal
SPRINGFIELD A multi-state salmonella outbreak has been linked to Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal.
It's the second multi-state salmonella outbreak announced by health authorities in two weeks, following a warning issued earlier this month linked to pre-cut melons.
The Illinois Department of Public Health said Friday that one salmonella case in Illinois matches the salmonella strain in the cereal-related outbreak, which has racked up 73 cases in 31 states.
"The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging people to check their cupboards for Kellogg's Honey Smacks and to throw them out if they find them, even if they have already eaten some and have not become sick," IDPH Director Dr. Nirav Shaw said. "If you have recently eaten the cereal and experience diarrhea, fever and cramps, contact your health care provider."
