Boise State suspends fraternity after more than two years of 'repeated violations'

Boise State University is suspending official recognition of a campus fraternity after “more than two years” of repeated violations of university policies and the Student Code of Conduct.

The Office of the Dean of Students issued the five-year suspension for Pi Kappa Phi based on a recommendation by the university’s Conduct Hearing Board, according to a Monday afternoon press release.

“Consequences this severe do not come lightly or easily, but all members of our university community have a responsibility to each other to be respectful and safe,” said Christian Wuthrich, Boise State’s State dean of students.

Boise State hasn’t suspended a fraternity for this “significant length” of time since the 1960s, spokesman Greg Hahn told the Statesman. The university can issue a suspension for one egregious violation or a pattern of repeated violations, Hahn said, but there is no prescribed number of violations that triggers such punishment.

1. The sooner these organizations go the way of the dinosaurs the better.

On our campus we have had a student die in his frat house, his frat buddies called their daddy to get an attorney before they called 911. The suspended that frat for 2 years, then they were back. They closed one a couple of years ago due to the group leading the singing of a racist song on a party bus. For that frat that was just the tip of the ice burg, we all knew about them for a long time. At my own university back home a young man jumped, or was pushed from a rooftop after a night of heavy drinking. The stories go on and on, they give them a slap on the wrist and in a year of so they are back because the rich alums insist on it.

2. Drinking isn't exclusive to fraternites

Nor is childish irresponsible behavior.
I have seen the behavior in fraternities, men’s dorms as well as athletic dormitories. There would be more fathers taking their child out of school and letting them face the punishment than there would be fathers pulling strings. As in life, the majority of the students don’t have fathers of such standing.
You can’t paint the whole fraternity system with the same entitlement brush.

3. I have spent 30 years on college campuses and yes, I can.

My brother was the President of his frat when he was an undergrad and he has agreed with me on this. He says they have outstayed their welcome.

Sorry we will have to agree to disagree on this. I have seen numerous students ruin their GPA's after pledging, it is real.

4. Ditto. Where I am now, frats and sororities are not allowed.

There is a completely different “climate” on campus, including less sexism. Still too much drinking, but no pledging.

6. Yea, I will continue to disagree respectfully

My wife and I met through fraternity functions, both served in leadership positions as each of our 3 children. None of us drink, and we all graduated and for each reason that you can to outlaw fraternal organizations I can give 5 reasons to allow their existence.
So what are the outlying conditions, productive students with positive experiences or drop out drunks?

5. Back in the

ancient times,60 years ago,the Pi Kap's were the Accounting and Finance Frat on my Campus. If you wanted a career in Government,Banking,or Wall Street,this was your Frat. You did your October Rush,enjoyed your one major Drunken bash and as a Pledge and if the Good Old Rich Boy's liked you,well,your got your Blazer,after you coughed up a Hundred and fifty Bucks,and you were in. Many of those Frat Boys are now running the State of Wisconsin into the ground.
