The Navy warship USS Daniel Inouye marked its first official stop at the Hawaiian island of Kailua-Kona last week, and it did so in style: with the ships trademark Go For Broke battle flag flying in the wind.
Named for Army veteran and late former Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hi), the first Japanese-American elected to Congress and Medal of Honor recipient for his courageous actions during World War II, the Navys newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyer first unveiled its distinctive battle flag during its commissioning in December 2021.
The flags core features include a hand grasping a torch and the motto Go For Broke, both borrowed from the insignia and motto of the highly decorated 442nd Regimental Combat Team with which Inouye served, an infantry unit comprised primarily of second-generation Japanese-Americans during a time when anti-Japanese racism was prevalent and internment was a matter of national policy.

(16,386 posts)Having been born and raised in Hawaii, where my mother's side of the family have been at least since the time of Kamehameha I...I can tell you that there is no Hawaiian island of "Kailua-Kona"!
Kailua-Kona is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. It is also known as Kailua (a name it shares with a community located on the windward side of Oʻahu), as Kona (a name it shares with the district to which it belongs) and as Kona Town. Kailua-Kona is the second-largest settlement on the island of Hawaii (after Hilo) and the largest settlement on the west side of the island, where it is the center of commerce and the tourist industry.

(25,816 posts)I remember his campaign slogan was Daniel In Every Way. A great man.
The 442 had some of the highest casualties of any army group in WWII.

Mine was the Sampson, DDG-10, which went to the scrap yard in '94.

Much respect to Senator Inouye. A true American hero.
BTW -Arleigh Burke Destroyers, Amphibs like the WASP and CARTER HALL classes, NIMIZ and FORD Class Carriers and the SSBNs and SSNs, are a good reason I don't worry about Putin.
Greatest Navy in the world!
