Aloha shirts on 'boogaloos' link symbol of peace to violence

HONOLULU (AP) — People following a violent movement that promotes a second U.S. civil war or the breakdown of modern society have been showing up at recent protests across the nation armed and wearing tactical gear. But the anti-government “boogaloo” movement has adopted an unlikely public and online symbol: the so-called Hawaiian shirt.

The often brightly colored, island-themed garment, known in Hawaii as an aloha shirt, is to people across the world synonymous with a laid back lifestyle. But in Hawaii, it has an association with aloha — the Native Hawaiian spirit of love, compassion and mercy.

The shirts are being worn by militant followers of the boogaloo philosophy — the antithesis of aloha — at demonstrations about coronavirus lockdowns, racial injustice and, most recently, the presidential election.

Boogaloo is a loosely affiliated far-right movement that includes a variety of extremist factions and political views. The name is a reference to a slang term for a sequel -- in this case, a second civil war.

Damn the boogaloos, I have several Hawaiian shirts in my closet and I enjoy wearing them. Hopefully my hippie length hair will distinguish me from a boogaloo.

Gaslighting with "Aloha Shirts".

They're the Opposite of Aloha.. They don't get to Confiscate our Aloha Shirts.

Just like the damn so-called "patriot party" smeared with trump stink. uh uh.. We are the Patriots.. they're the Domestic Terrorist party.. hoisting trump flags in a deadly failed coup to overthrow the Will of the People. Fuck them all to Rot in Hell

Like many people who spend a significant part of their working life outside, I have that "look" already. I think that I am going to have to grow a ponytail again, and wear tie-dies and sandals.....I have worn a mustache since my last day in boot camp in 1972, I hope to hell that the freaking Fascists don't adopt that look next.

The 70s-era mustaches are called porn 'staches now (e.g., John Holmes, Harry Reems, Ron Jeremy). You might want to grow a goatee.

I don't mind being mistaken for a porn star, I just don't want to be pegged as a rightwingnut.

8. The shame is is that Hawaiian shirts, much like the guayabera are excellent in hot climates

That is why I wore them; I didn't give a damn about the floral prints. I don't wear guayaberas because they are usually too ornate for my taste. I guess next summer I will have to go shirtless, which means I have to start working out......

But, I wouldn't touch one today. Not sure shoulder length hair is enough to negate the horrific boogaloo vibe. On the other hand, what do I do with my only jacket that's bright yellow? I hate to believe that the insurrectionist are determining today's fashion. Let's just put them all in orange and be done with it.

Burnt orange is reserved for us Texas Longhorn fans. Hook 'em.
