Meet the candidates Macon County sheriff's race heads to special election
MACON COUNTY, Ga. — Early voting for the Macon County Sheriff's special election concluded Friday.
The race, which has been closely watched for months, comes after last year's contested results and subsequent legal challenges left Macon County without a permanent sheriff.
As Macon County voters prepare to head to the polls on Tuesday, the outcome of this special election will finally bring resolution to the sheriff's race, ending months of uncertainty in the county's law enforcement leadership.
In November 2024, Jeffery Canady received the most votes in the sheriff's race. However, challenges to his eligibility led to a series of legal battles. In January 2025, a probate judge named Richard Martin, who finished second in the November election, as interim sheriff pending a special election.
