Georgia on My Mind' plays at end of Capitol service for former President Jimmy Carter

It was a solemn moment for the man who grew up in Plains and is the only president from Georgia.

WASHINGTON — As the nation continues to remember former President Jimmy Carter, Georgia also remembers him as a man who grew up in a small town and never forgot where he came from.

Carter, who died at the age of 100 on Dec. 29, is being honored for his life accomplishments with a state funeral that made its way from metro Atlanta to the nation's capital city on Tuesday. There's one moment from the U.S. Capitol service that stands out as a definite reminder of where Carter's humble beginning started: Georgia.

When the ceremony ended, some of our nation's leaders and members of Congress took a moment to pay their respects. The song "Georgia on My Mind" -- sung and made popular by another son of Georgia, Ray Charles -- was playing.

Surrounded by the Honor Guard, all eyes were on the 39th president's casket. And Georgia's U.S. Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff were among those who paused to honor him as they song played.

As a longtime Atlantan, I cried when “Georgia on My Mind” was played.
