Stone Mountain Park to close Saturday ahead of planned protest

A day before left-wing protesters were supposed to gather at Stone Mountain Park, officials announced the park will be closed. The announcement comes just before the start of Super Bowl weekend, with an estimated 1 million visitors in town for the game and activities surrounding it.

According to a short statement sent out Friday evening by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, “no vehicles or pedestrian traffic will be allowed into the park” on Saturday.

“Only hotel and campground guests will be allowed entry and exit through the park gate,” the statement said. “Security concerns have been identified and are being addressed by state and local law enforcement authorities.”

The protest was initially planned in response to a white nationalist rally that was scheduled for Saturday, which had its permits denied in November by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association.

The park is popular among a diverse group of people, but with that big ole confederate carving -- and history of cross burnings, etc. -- it is a depressing place.
