Two weeks and counting: UGA political organizations host gubernatorial debate watch parties
Note: This article provides some details about each topic discussed in the Monday night debate.Two weeks before the midterm elections, opposing University of Georgia political organizations hosted two viewing parties on Oct. 23 for the first Georgia gubernatorial debate in which candidates sparred on issues including voter suppression, taxes and health care.
The debate, hosted by the Atlanta Press Club, featured Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams, Republican candidate Brian Kemp and Libertarian candidate Ted Metz.

Voter suppression
The topic of voter suppression, in which Kemp, Georgia Secretary of State, has been accused of suppressing thousands of minority voters, created clear disagreements on the stage.
Kemp dismissed the allegations as “absolutely not true” and as a “distraction to take away from Ms. Abrams’ extreme agenda that she has for a government takeover of health care, wanting to give the HOPE scholarship to those that are here illegally and many, many other radical positions.”
Abrams responded with an explanation of voter suppression and the role she believes Kemp has on the issue.
