Ban the box policy taken up by Augusta committee

Members of the Augusta Commission will resume work on a “ban the box” policy at a meeting today of the city’s administrative services committee.

The policy, originally pushed by Mayor Hardie Davis, removes a checkbox for criminal convictions from city job applications.

The concept was later folded into a set of 24 human resources policy revisions with a consultant’s recommendation that the checkbox not be removed but its answer recorded and withheld unless relevant to the hiring process.

Last month, the commission decided instead to approve the policy separately and send the revisions back for more work.
