UGA using full 90 business days permitted before releasing info under new athletic open records law
The University of Georgia is taking full advantage of the new open records law for athletics passed by state legislators after football coach Kirby Smart discussed with them the “difference” in play at his new program with competitors.
The law allows Georgia and other public universities up to 90 business days to provide information related to athletics except for salaries for non-clerical staff members. That was a change from three business days schools previously had to respond to requests for public records.
Thursday marked the 87th business day at UGA since the new law — O.C.G.A § 50-18-71(d.1) — took effect July 1.
Under the law, pushed through and approved in the morning of March 23 and later signed by Gov. Nathan Deal, the school can provide information not related to salary any time before the 90 days, but has not in requests submitted by OnlineAthens.com/Athens Banner-Herald or others during that time, according to Bob Taylor, the school’s open records manager.
