What do other Georgians feel about the Stone Mountain carving?

I'm kinda' curious what other Georgians feel about the carving on Stone Mountain now that it's been called out by the NAACP. Do you think it's a tribute to pro-slavery factions and promotes bigotry, or do you feel it's an honest part of our state's history?

1. That's kind of the problem I have with Mount Rushmore.

White patriarchs carved into Native American land. Could never stomach to see it.

2. I'm not a Georgian, but...

blowing up history just because it doesn't fit with our current ethos never sits well.

We hated it when the terraists destroyed those mountain temples because they were some sort of sacrilege-- so how would we be that much different if we blew this up because it's a human rights "sacrilege".

How much history should we destroy-- from the pyramids built by slaves, to the Roman coliseum, where they fed slaves to the lions, to the mansions of the old South which were financed and built by slave labor...

Kill off the flag for sure, but to destroy monuments that will help future archaeologists and historians understand those times? Not really. Keep them as the monuments to the victims, if nothing else.

7. That's been the thing I remember whenever they talk about digging up someone's grave or defacing the

mountain up even more by removing the sculptures. I remember the video of a Budha sculpture getting blasted. It's like trying to change history. No matter how much you'd like to, it's impossible. Better to learn from it than to try and change it.

3. I feel creepy just seeing St Mountain from miles away. Would like them to do

something else there, like a civil rights monument.

I don't like the carving but I am not sure what, if anything, can be done to remove it.

5. Pretty much agree with the other posters

Defaces mountain - Check
Convert to a civil rights and slavery education center (or something similar) - check
Remove from mountain? Probably not.

The true history of the people on that mountain, and the evil they stood for, should become the primary focus. Make it history education, not idolization of evil ideas.

6. I wouldn't remove it...

cause the damage is done. I consider the place to be some weird historical museum combined with a money making tourist trap.

I like the actual mountain itself. It's nice to climb and is a marvel in itself. I used to take my kids to play in the ball pit place because they loved it and the A/C was great. I could do without the entire faux western little town area. The laser show is interesting because it's lasers but the theme is enough to make you barf (PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW I'M FREEEEEE...) If they just stuck to simple cartoons and geometric patterns, it wouldn't be so bad. The museums are interesting and more than just about the confederacy but they shouldn't fly the flags there.

Honestly, I have not been in years. We used to go mainly when family came from out of town. Or as I said, as a place for the kids to play.

10. According to Snopes in August, the NAACP wasn't calling for its removal,

although an official's personal opinion was that it should be. I'm with others. Wish it wasn't there, but failing a substantial population demanding its removal -- it's a part of history. FWIW, those figures look out over many miles of a society that is itself a monument to their failure.
