Survey: Florida property tax amendment would pass if election were today
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Nearly two-thirds of Florida voters would back a proposed constitutional amendment to slash property taxes if the election were held today, though support remains deeply divided along party lines, according to a poll released by Sachs Media.
The survey of 850 registered Florida voters, reported by WINK News, found that 64% would vote yes on the Save Our Homes From Excessive Property Taxes amendment, safely clearing the 60% supermajority threshold required to pass constitutional changes in the state. Another 36% of respondents reported they would vote no.
However, the poll found a stark partisan split. The measure enjoys overwhelming support among Republicans at 87% and solid backing from independent voters at 62%. Conversely, only 35% of Democrats said they would vote in favor of the amendment, while 65% would oppose it.
The proposed amendment seeks to exempt the first $250,000 of a homestead propertys assessed value from all local levies except school district taxes. If approved by voters in November, it would also mandate that local governments restrict their remaining property tax revenues strictly to core public needs, specified as public safety, education, infrastructure, and natural resources.
