TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Florida will ban thousands of homeless people from setting up camp or sleeping on public property under a bill lawmakers sent to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who supports the idea.
Counties, with approval from the state Department of Children and Families, would be able to designate areas for the homeless to camp for up to a year under the bill the Senate passed 27-12 late Tuesday. Anyone using those encampments would be prohibited from using alcohol or illegal drugs.
Supporters say the bill will help eliminate the nuisance of homeless people living on public property and parks. They also argue it will be easier to provide local services to the homeless if theyre in one location.
Its our responsibility to deal with homelessness and thats why we cant wait any longer to bring this solution. The current model is not working, said Republican Sen. Jonathan Martin, the bills sponsor. This bill is a compassionate response to the shortage of shelters.

(6,414 posts)Which may be part of the plan. DeathSantis may be trying to gather the 'undesirables' in one place so that he can start processing them into busses a'la Greg Abattoir. The fact that they are prohibiting drugs and alcohol to a group that has major issues with said substances is also suspect, as those who are into that will never want to stay in such a place. So, he will do this so he looks all 'compassionate' but we know this is just to gather intel on 'these people' so that he can either incarcerate them or bus them away. DeathSantis knows no mercy or compassion. He just doesn't want to feel bad when he rides by those tents in his limo.

I'm often told that if Cuba does rent control, it has to be bad.
