Democrats eye Florida congressional map as Supreme Court rules against Alabama
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FLV) In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling 5-4 in favor of throwing out Alabamas redistricting map, Florida Democrats hope the Sunshine States Republican-favoring map will be struck down.
Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh upheld a lower-court ruling that found in the state where more than 25% of residents are black, the Voting Rights Act was violated where only one majority Black seat existed out of seven districts.
Under certain circumstances, minority opportunity districts must be drawn that have at least 50% minority voting-age population, according to the Voting Rights Act.
U.S. Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., said the ruling is a major victory for voting rights!
It solidifies our Florida Fair Districts Amendments, protects minority voters and strikes a fatal blow to Floridas gerrymandered congressional map, Soto said on Twitter.
