Florida
Related: About this forumIs there such a thing as a blue county in Florida?
I live in Pasco but work in Hillsborough and wondered if there were a better place to live here, once I retire in a few years.

(3,800 posts)I moved into a moderate area 28 years ago and now it's the land of trump. Ugh.

(67,112 posts)it Florida is now a favorite for MAGA types. Plus, Trump is here and DeSantis. And it is often R all the way from local up to the governor. My move is a horrible one, complicated for a bunch of reasons, but I decided with all of the new laws and all of the republicans it was not a good fit for me. Plus where I am the roads are congested and they are rolling houses, condos and shopping across what used to be beautiful greenlands. They just plow everything over.

I love New England. But so help me God I hate the cold so much. When I left the north I swore I would never drive in snow again and I won't.

(6,841 posts)But the rethuglicans gerrymandered our area and we no longer have real representation. Al Lawson was our rep and now the district is split and both have rethuglicans. No representation of our interests.

(4,044 posts)Southern Florida is a mixed bag in every community, town, and county.
Central and Northern Florida is seriously red.
I live in the Kings Point 55+ community in Delray Beach, PBC. I have some nice neighbors; a split of Repubs and Dems. And there are some assh*les around here; also a split between Repubs and Dems.
The very worst ones are Repubs. But, I am sometimes surprised at how bad my fellow Dems can be at living peacefully with others.
I don't think there's anywhere in FL that has more Dems than PBC, but we're not a large majority.

(3,800 posts)She's wealthy so it is hard for me to think about PBC as affordable. Silly I guess. But I must say they do have fabulous restaurants over there.

We're the only South Florida county that didn't flip to Ron DeSantis in 2022.

(4,783 posts)It's pretty progressive. The city council takes pride in being woke, the county commission is very friendly to land conservation. They go as far as they can under the thumb of the state. It's a college town, so I'm not overwhelmed with what's available to older folks as a whole (partly good, as the hellhole retirement ghettos haven't arrived), and the old hippie scene is dying out, but it's worth a look.
