Looking for help finding an independent/assisted living facility in central/north Florida

It's finally time to move my 99 year old stepdad and 90 year old mom out of their house. They still live independently by themselves but my stepdad's health has deteriorated. He gets confused easily and overall requires more care. My mom is the full-time caregiver, chauffeur, cook, pays the bills,...

They live in Titusville and there are no options there. I am thinking somewhere around New Smyrna, Gainesville, Jacksonville or someplace NE of Orlando. I'm an only child and would like to have them move to Atlanta to be close to me, as would my mom, but there's no way he will move to cold weather.

ANY help is greatly appreciated since I have no idea of where to begin.

I'm trying to cut my drive time down, currently 7-8 hours, even if it's only by 30 minutes.

It looks like they may have a location in Jacksonville so I will check it out.

Thanks!

don't live anywhere close to Florida, but I will tell you to visit any and all places that are possibilities. I've looked for independent/assisted living two different times for people, and found there are huge differences in them. You want to see what the residents are like, how clean the facility is, what the food is like, and so on.

Keep in mind that waiting this long to get into a place like that is going to make getting them moved and settled in harder than it would be if they'd done this several years ago.

I hope you find a good place and they adjust well.

Right now we're working on getting my brother and his wife, both 78 years old, out of the two story house they've lived in since 1980, and into independent/assisted living. He's now essentially blind, and she has health and mobility issues, and cannot walk up or down stairs. She's been confined to the first floor of the house for several years now, and there is only a half bath there. It's frankly appalling that they didn't make the move several years ago, but things are moving forward.

One huge problem with people being willing to go into independent/assisted living is that they have often lived for decades in the same place. Because they haven't moved in so long, they have no idea how to do it. All too often they have far too much stuff that should have been gotten rid of years ago. Which is one of the essential problems of my brother and wife. They're hoarders, although not quite as bad as what you see on the hoarding shows. Still, it's a large enough four bedroom home that they had pretty much filled up. Various family members, myself included, have been helping them clear things out, and they're gathering information on places to move to. Hopefully the move will be completed in a very few months.

They have everything from private houses to an Alzheimer’s unit. There’s a grocery store on site and they will deliver for a very minimal amount. Barber shop, restaurant and motel. It’s right on the Suwannee and they had a boat they would take residents out on. Beautiful dinning room that looked like a high end restaurant. My grandmother lived there the last few years of her life. It started as an orphanage many years ago. It’s right outside Live Oak.

They lost money on the nursing home but that was ok with them. Once you were a resident you could step up to the level of care you needed so most of the people in the nursing home were long time residents. My grandmother was in her own apartment. The “house parents” of the apartment building were very good about keeping an eye on her. I don’t think much of most organized religion but those folks were sincere in the care of the people who lived there being their mission. No preaching just lots of taking care of. It’s been a long time so things may have changed but I kinda doubt it. It had been that way since they opened as an orphanage.
