DeSantis calls for $1 billion to brace for climate change

If the Legislature approves the new program, “Resilient Florida” will use revenues from the state documentary stamp tax to pay for the debt service on $1 billion in bonds for projects that address the impacts of climate change.

Faced with mounting evidence that sea level rise and intensifying storms will cost Florida governments billions into the future, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday announced a $1 billion investment over four years to allow local governments to build new infrastructure to address the impacts.

If the Legislature approves the new program, “Resilient Florida” will use revenues from the state documentary stamp tax to pay for the debt service on $1 billion in bonds for projects that address the impacts of climate change.

“The purpose of this is to tackle the challenges posed by flooding, intensifying storm events and sea level rise,” DeSantis said at a news conference to announce his proposal for a record $96.6 billion state budget.

“We believe that this makes a lot of economic sense,’' he said. He added that the goal is “trying to get ahead” of rising property insurance costs by allowing local governments to finance projects.

Maybe it's a start when Republicans finally concede that climate change is happening, but we knew this 30 years ago....

"It'll just wash away"

1 billion $$ is not going to stop the sea from swallowing up those multi-millionare's coastal properties.

And we know they'll be 1st in line for the billion dollar infrastructure.

Will this money come from the people who continue to build in coastal flood zones, the big developers? Or will it go to them to continue unsustainable growth? Will it come from the hotels on Miami Beach, Dizzy World or Destin, or are you going to take it from education funding? You fought like hell against the $15.00 minimum wage to protect the tourist and farming industry Are we supposed to trust you for flooding infrastructure projects? That billion bucks will end up in the wrong hands and the people of Florida will gain nothing from it as long as you are governor. Quit building on the beaches fool! Quit building where there is not enough drinking water...

Go to your party, have Scott and Rubio stand in the congress of the US and say, "We have a serious problem with climate change, we need to address the underlying causes and deal with the disease, not the symptoms; then we can talk about your billion bucks.

I am tired of these SOBs talking out of both sides of their mouths.
