Inauguration Day has a cold but seldom snowy history in Washington.
The 2021 presidential inauguration is predicted to be dry and seasonably chilly.
'President-elect Joe Biden will take the oath of office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington at noon on Wednesday, braving the elements like most of his predecessors. Unlike practically every other aspect of presidential inaugurations, the weather during the swearing-in ceremony cant be planned in advance.
This year, early signs suggest it will be a seasonably chilly winter day in Washington, with partly cloudy skies and temperatures near 40 degrees midday.
Past presidential inaugurations have often been cold and dry, which isnt too surprising as the event coincides with Washingtons lowest average temperatures of the year. The Districts average high temperature Jan. 20 is 43 degrees and the average low is 28.
At noon, temperatures typically hover around 37 degrees with a wind chill slightly below freezing, according to records kept by the National Weather Service.
Most January inaugurations have been slightly colder than these averages, however. Since 1937, inaugurations have had an average high temperature of 40.9 degrees and an average low of 27.5 degrees. The warmest its been in Washington on Jan. 20 was 70 degrees in 1951, but it wasnt an inauguration year. Surprisingly, no January inauguration has hit 60 degrees.'>>>
((A personal story: 'On Jan. 21, 1985, a blast of Arctic cold forced Reagan to take the oath of office indoors, and the inaugural parade was canceled. The temperature in D.C. that morning dropped to minus-4 degrees (a record for the date), and climbed to only 7 degrees at noon.' SO, I walked from Dr. office, across the Mall to our apartment in SW DC, and next day, our daughter was born (on her due date!!!))
