The D.C. area is in for some serious rain Wednesday afternoon. ... After a mild Tuesday, a robust squall line, followed by a cold front, is hitting the District to mark the middle of the week.

The line is approaching from the west, and began creeping into the region just after noon Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Prince William, Stafford and Fauquier counties until 1 p.m., with possible gusts up to 60 mph and the potential for tornado development.

A severe thunderstorm warning for much of southern Maryland, along with part of Fairfax County, Virginia, warned of similar hazards until 1:30 p.m. ... The system will bring those risks to other parts of the area Wednesday afternoon.

“Midday we’ll be tracking a line of pouring rain, potentially damaging winds and even an isolated tornado threat,” said 7News First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan.
