Prison officers protest pay with 'sick out' statewide
An undetermined number of correctional officers did not report to work at state prisons on Monday, part of a planned “sick out” to put pressure on elected officials to increase their pay, according to multiple state workers familiar with the matter.
One 15-year veteran correctional officer, who requested anonymity out of fear of reprisal from supervisors, said Gov. John Carney and lawmakers have not taken officers' safety "seriously."
“It’s all about security first,” he said. “We are running so far below protocol that officers are coming to work and telling them that they are literally terrified, they are scared to work in these facilities.”
He said roughly 200 correctional officers called in sick Monday, a number The News Journal was not able to verify. The DOC employs in total about 2,500 workers, which includes administrators, probation officers, records technicians and correctional officers.
