Malloy blasts Maine Governor's remarks on drug trafficking as racist

WATERBURY — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy called Maine Gov. Paul LePage’s provocative remarks blaming drug trafficking in his state on black and Hispanics from Waterbury racist.

Yet, Malloy stopped short of calling LePage a racist himself in criticizing his counterpart from Maine in his first public comments Friday since LePage made his controversial assertion at a town hall-style meeting Wednesday night.

“I think he sounds like a racist,” Malloy said during a news conference in Waterbury.

LePage stated Wednesday that he keeps a three-ringed binder of photos from drug arrests in Maine, and 90 percent of the pictures are blacks and Hispanics from Waterbury and the boroughs of the Bronx and Brooklyn in New York City.
