State Considering 95 Layoffs As Federal Funds Dry Up

HARTFORD — The labor department is considering laying off as many as 95 state employees and closing offices because the federal government is providing $28 million to $32 million less than expected to the state, officials said Tuesday.

The department has been speaking with union leaders as it seeks to make as few layoffs as possible, said Nancy Steffens, the department’s chief spokeswoman.

“No worker has been told about any official layoffs,'' Steffens said Tuesday. “It looks, unfortunately, that we're going to see some layoffs. We just don't have a number.''

She added: “We know there are going to be some layoffs. We're trying to make it as few as possible, but we do know that the budget shortfall is significant.''
