Looking into Palisade's Ballot Issue 2A

Ballot Issue 2A promises to bring $1,391,756 to Palisade’s budget. The money would be used to fund the safety and well-being of Palisade—that means funding firefighters, police officers, and other social services. This ballot issue is not a matter of expanding the budget. According to Greg Mikolai, the mayor of Palisade, it is to make up for money lost. “We have seen a pretty big impact upon our retail marijuana sales taxes over the last year with Grand Junction opening up recreational marijuana facilities. We are finding it more difficult to hire and retain first responders.”

The mayor continued, saying the increased tax would help Palisade fund some of its bigger projects, like improving its roadways. The town also hopes a good chunk of this money comes from travelers. “To put it bluntly, let’s have the tourists pay for our streets and our police,” said Mayor Mikolai.
