DENVER Monday was the first day back at school for more than 92,000 Denver Public School students. Monday was also a scorcher, with the mercury reaching nearly 100 degrees but 60 DPS school buildings were not equipped to handle the record-breaking heat because they lack air conditioning.
Stedman Elementary School In northeast Denver is one of the schools without air conditioning. Teachers try to come up with efficient ways to keep the temperatures in classrooms down.
Our Teachers are very innovative; theyve created some proactive solutions, said principal Michael Atkins.
The blinds stay closed during the day, and the lights are off in the classrooms. One teacher brought in a portable air conditioning unit her family had. Another teacher bought insulation from Home Depot to install over the windows.

Of course, Denver is already a heavily Democratic (Blue) area, but the impact will spread.

(2,520 posts)The more AC we use the more energy we use the more we contribute to global warming. My high school and college never had AC in the classrooms or dorms. Why not move school year opening to September?

(62,052 posts)design, until then we can't have kids broiling in schools that cant keep up with climate driven heat records. We can't solve our problems on their backs. How about turning off your AC in your auto to save on carbon emissions? Per person there bigger savings on that than efficient AC cooling of a kid in school.
